Back in February we announced the winners of the EMEA edition of the annual NAVTEQ Global LBS Challenge. Austrian-based Mobilizy GmbH won with their mobile LBS application, Wikitude Drive, which is a turn-by-turn navigation system based on NAVTEQ® maps that utilizes an augmented reality (AR) camera mode and text-to-speech instructions.
NAVTEQ Network for Developers (NN4D) has interviewed all the winners from EMEA and this is the first in an article series, where we’ll take a closer look at the developers behind this year’s winning LBS applications in EMEA.
"When envisioning various use cases of AR, we quickly thought of navigation. We were wondering if it was possible to draw driving instructions onto the live camera image of a mobile phone utilizing GPS and a compass. We developed a proof-of-concept within a few weeks over the summer and were stunned by the results," said Philipp Breuss-Schneeweis, CEO, Mobilizy, and Sebastian Höbarth, the Wikitude Drive Lead Developer, on the question of how they came up with their app idea.
When developing Wikitude Drive, Mobilizy chose to target the HTC Hero, which is based on Android. They programmed in Java™ ME, using the Eclipse Integrated Development Environment (IDE) and used the NAVTEQ Web Services API to access NAVTEQ’s routing service.

Meet the Mobilizy team
Mobilizy sent us a video with some impressions from their team in the office in Germany after their award, so we edited together this little film which gives some glimpses from the Global LBS Challenge awards in Barcelona and the Mobilizy office and the team behind the winning app.

I am so curious how their solution looks like! Any information when something is going to be released?

Hi Jeff,
I have sent a note to Mobilizy asking if they want to comment on their release plans. I did however find the following comment on their website:
"If you want to see our winning app, you have to be a bit more patient. We are going to announce exciting news soon."
